With festival season in full swing, we teamed up with beauty and lifestyle blogger, Emma, to talk all the latest trends in the world of festival make up. As a talented MUA and owner of What Emma Did.com, she’s shared all her insight so we can hit the main stage feeling like we ought to be up there with the acts! And if there’s one thing we’ve learned when it comes to the rules of great festival make up… there are no rules! If there was ever a time to experiment, this is it. So go crazy, you know you want to.

Whether you’re planning a trip to Wireless, Glastonbury or Isle of Wight Festival, be sure to try out one of our top 3 looks! (Or all of them depending on how long you’re there.) So here’s the lowdown on what’s trending and how to create it…

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT THIS TREND?

The Boho trend never seems to date – it comes around every year with a slightly different twist. This season, I’m loving how effortlessly chic the boho makeup trend is, as it has some serious versatility. It doesn’t take much to execute as the key is to lightly accentuate your natural features. Then, you can choose to layer it up.

HOW CAN WE RECREATE IT?

Base

Firstly, work on a minimal skin base. It’s all about letting freckles come through, minimizing shine, but giving your skin a soft, dewy finish. Look to use silk finish foundations and just lightly use setting powder.

Finish

Bronzer is key, so don’t be afraid to go a little heavier with this. Apply to your cheekbones and temples, and anywhere the sun would naturally hit your face. You can skip any peach or pink blushers, but a touch of highlighter on the tops of the cheeks will work wonders against the bronzer.

Eyes

For the eyes, look at a colour palette of browns, bronze, creams, burnt oranges, burgundy’s, smokey neutrals and shimmery beiges. You can eye contour if you like (where it’s darker and heavier around the crease and winged out, with a lighter middle), or you can sweep layers of neutrals all over the lid. Lashes should be lengthened and volumized naturally, so skip the false lashes, but layer on the black mascara!

Lips

Lips work well with matte shades, but if you are a fan of gloss, you can always add a little bit over the top. Matte dusky pinks, soft peaches and nudes work best, lined with cinnamon/spice shade lip liner and filled in to give a full boho pout.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT THIS TREND?

In a season where we go crazy for pretty pastels, floral prints and dewy, light makeup, the boom in the glitter makeup trend is fantastic to see! Of course, classic spring/summer looks are fabulous, but throw in a touch of glitter and it suddenly becomes magical. However, glitter makeup looks can be tricky to create. After all, you want it to look chic and stylish, while avoiding looking like a unicorn or children’s party entertainer. I love this trend because when you wear it right, it gives that subtle summer sheen and shimmer, letting you sparkle your way through the crowd.

HOW CAN WE RECREATE IT?

Choose a key area

The biggest tip when embracing the glitter trend is to focus on one key area which will be the ‘sparkle spot’. Usually, the eyes are the best for this. You can be creative with glitter eyeliners, glitter liquid eyeshadows and loose glitter pigments, which can be swept all over the eyelid.

Accessorise

Of course, if you keep the glitter to the eyes only, you can still experiment with glitter accessories, glitter gels and shimmer creams on the décolletage, and even sparkly headbands. You can also accentuate the eye area by sprinkling a touch of face glitter around the eyes and the brow area, or even play around with face jewels adorned on the temples.

Base

The key here is to keep your foundation and bronzer fairly minimal, and go bold with the eyes and lips. It’s all about being bold and arty with the eyes, in which you can reflect this with a striking lip colour too. Finish the look off with a sprinkling of glitter along the hair parting!

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT THIS TREND?

The metallic make up trend has to be my favourite of all. Mainly because it can look glossy and high shine or striking and rocky – depending on how you work it! The main reason metallic makeup works so well is because it is so versatile. At one point it was about chunky sparkles and sequins, but now it’s all about smoother metallics and mirror-shine finishes. Think glossy lips with tons of high shine!

HOW CAN WE RECREATE IT?

Choose a colour palette

Create the perfect metallic look by working to the colour palette you like. Bronze and gold shades work best with this trend, but you can also go bold with emerald greens, shimmery silvers, cobalt blues, and even aubergines and metallic greys. If you’re experimental, choose two colour combinations for a statement look, or start with a single shade if you're more of a subtle gal.

Layer up

As metallic reflects light, it's worth adding a matte eyeshadow shade of the same colour to the eye first. Then layer up with your metallic shade. Skin can be either dewy or matte, but layers of gleaming highlighter work well with this trend.

Lips

Finish off lips with a powerful gloss. Wet-look lips look fabulous is any colour, be it nude or bright red, paired with stripped back skin, a flash of highlight on the upper cheeks, and a sleek metallic eye.

Product

You’ll need high quality products for this look, so make sure your metallic eyeshadow is highly pigmented with reflective particles. A cheat’s way is to load on your metallic eyeshadow, and then lightly dab over with a super glossy metallic lip gloss! And then use setting spray like never before. You want the eyeshadow and glossy lips to stay put all day, with minimum top ups.
